The libel action by a woman who witnessed the shooting of three IRA members in Gibraltar 12 years ago, against the former editor of the Sunday Times, Mr Andrew Neil, has been settled, the Supreme Court was told yesterday.

The Chief Justice, Mr Justice Hamilton, with the consent of both sides, made an order striking out the action taken in the High Court by Ms Carmen Proetta against Mr Neil and the Sunday Times. The action was also against RTE, which was named as a third party.

The Chief Justice also withdrew the Supreme Court's referral to the European Court of a question concerning Mr Neil's claim that Ms Proetta should provide security for the defence costs in case she should fail in her action.
