The President, Mrs Mc Aleese, yesterday praised Trocaire for keeping Ireland humble at a time of economic prosperity by raising awareness of the needs of the people it supports throughout the developing world.
Speaking on a visit to Trocaire offices, the first by an Irish head of State, Mrs McAleese wished the organisation a happy 25th birthday. She said Trocaire was an example of the best Irish traditions of charity and hospitality and ocaire its Lenten box had a place in every home.
During her visit to the head office in Booterstown, Co Dublin, Mrs McAleese spoke via a telephone link to Trocaire's office in Nairobi. She was introduced to the organisation's 50-strong staff by its chairman, Bishop John Kirby, and its director, Mr Justin Kilcullen.
