THE President, Mrs Robinson, will meet the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, today to discuss her candidature for the post of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, writes Joe Carroll from Washington. However, an announcement on the filling of the post is not expected at this time.
The President is now regarded as the leading contender for the post which became vacant earlier this year when Mr Jose AyaloLasso returned to Ecuador to become Foreign Minister.
The Government has been lobbying other governments in favour of Mrs Robinson, but the decision will be made by Mr Annan, who will submit his nomination to the UN General Assembly, probably in September. The assembly is expected to approve the Secretary General's nomination.
