London - A lay preacher caught driving without insurance claimed God had offered him divine protection from accidents, a court heard yesterday.

Peter David (66), of Port Talbot, south Wales, told police he no longer needed road tax or an MOT for the same reason.

Police flagged down the pensioner in Port Talbot last November after spotting the unusual number plate, DEUT 818, on his car.

Neath Magistrates found David guilty of all charges and fined him £150 and ordered him to pay £50 costs. After sentencing, David told the court: "I do not expect to pay it."
