The Israeli embassy in Brussels was evacuated as a precautionary measure today after a letter was received containing an unidentified white power, a spokesman said.

The substance, found by a secretary in a letter addressed to the ambassador, was being analysed by Belgian authorities and results were expected by tomorrow, he said.

"It was opened by a secretary. We called the police and security services to deal with the envelope," spokesman Mr Daniel Saada said.

"We decided to evacuate the embassy as a precautionary measure," he added, saying that the ambassador to Belgium, Mr Shaul Amor, was not in the building at the time.

He said only a small number of people were in the building, located in a residential district of Brussels, because of a Jewish holiday.
