A 60-year-old man who was left in a critical condition after being attacked in Sligo last week has died.

Cyril Moran was assaulted at his home at River Road in the Cartron Point area of Sligo Town on Thursday morning last.

He was rushed to Sligo General Hospital following the attack where his injuries were described as critical.

Mr Moran died yesterday after his condition deteriorated quickly over the weekend.

The State Pathologist is expected to conduct a postmortem at Sligo General Hospital today.

Gardaí last night said a 29-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident was being questioned at Manorhamilton Garda station.

In addition, a 28-year-old man arrested on Friday night has been released from custody at Ballymoate Garda station.

A Garda spokeswoman said a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Local residents last night expressed shock at Mr Moran's violent death.

"It's terrible to think he died like this. He wouldn't have hurt a fly and it's just horrible to think that somebody would have attacked him," said one neighbour.

It is understood he only moved to the Cartron area within the past two years.

Gardaí have asked anyone with information in connection to the incident or Mr Moran's last movements to contact the incident room at Sligo Garda station on 071-9157071 or the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111.
