The preliminary post mortem on the bodies of a man and his daughter who were found dead in Clonmel yesterday show they both died of single gunshot wounds, a Garda spokesman said.

The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, carried out the examinations at St Joseph’s Hospital, Clonmel.

Deirdre Crowley, who was found dead yesterday

The bodies of Mr Christopher Crowley (44) and his six-year-old daughter, Deirdre, were found after gardaí forced entry into the house on Colville Road yesterday.

Mr Crowley was separated from his wife and had taken Deirdre for a day out in December 1999 but had never returned. A search for the two failed to locate them and at one stage it was thought they may have gone to England.

It was announced earlier today that a senior Garda officer had been appointed to lead an investigation into the deaths.

Yesterday, Chief Supt Pat O'Boyle told The Irish Timesthat Clonmel gardaí became suspicious of the male occupant of a house while making inquiries in the Colville Road area at about 3.15 p.m.

When gardai returned to the house they heard a muffled sound and forced their way in where the discovered the bodies of Mr Crowley and his daughter.
