A Portuguese man was jailed for nine months yesterday for trafficking of illegal immigrants.

A Portuguese man was jailed for nine months yesterday for trafficking of illegal immigrants.

Luis Filipe Nogueira de Macedo (41) pleaded guilty to bringing two Brazilian women into Ireland on October 29th last in contravention of the Illegal Immigrants (Trafficking) Act, 2000.

Dublin District Court heard the women came off a flight from Amsterdam at Dublin Airport where gardaí became suspicious when the saw de Macedo helping them fill in landing cards at the immigration desk.

The women were refused entry and de Macedo was arrested.

He admitted he had been approached by a woman in the UK to go to Amsterdam to bring the Brazilians into London, via Ireland.

He was paid £500 sterling plus air fare. He met the women in Amsterdam where he helped them get new Brazilian passports.

He had been living in London for several years and worked for an international courier company.

Judge John Coughlan jailed him for nine months and fined him €1,000.
