A maximum court fine on Maxol Ltd for oil spillages last year has been welcomed by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Following two spillages at Maxol's Ballinteer service station in December last year, the company was convicted on two counts of causing polluting matter to enter a drain contrary to the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act 1977 as amended.

Judge Desmond Windle imposed the maximum penalty of £1,000 for the incident on December 28th and a fine of £800 with costs for the incident on December 18th.

Mr Des Taylor, deputy manager of the county council, said: "This was a serious spillage, but the damage was limited because of the prompt actions taken by our departments."
