Northern Ireland politicians of all persuasions have welcomed the nomination of Senator George Mitchell for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Senator Mitchell, who was instrumental in setting up the Executive by helping the Ulster Unionists and Sinn Fein overcome their differences during the 10-week review process, was nominated for the prize by US Congressman Mr Sam Gejdenson.

The UUP security spokesman, Mr Ken Maginnis, said he was a great admirer of Mr Mitchell.

"I have always been a huge fan of George Mitchell," he said. "I envy his patience and admire his arbitration skills. He is a man in a million as far as Northern Ireland is concerned."
