GARDAÍ IN Tralee, Co Kerry, are appealing for information after a Polish man was seriously assaulted on his way home from a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, who is in his 20s and works in Tralee, was walking with another Polish man when he was set upon by what is understood to have been a group of up to four people in the Moyderwell area.

He was being treated at Kerry General Hospital in Tralee yesterday for facial injuries and a number of fractures to his legs.

The man and his friend had gone to a chip shop after being at a nightclub and were taking their food home when the attack took place.

Sgt Noel Burke of Tralee Garda station said the circumstances of the attack were not clear and gardaí were waiting to interview the injured man.

However, they believe the man's assailants or assailant were from the Tralee area. An altercation appears to have taken place but it is not yet clear how many were involved in beating the man.

The second Polish man was not attacked.

CCTV footage has been recovered and it shows three people including a woman in white shorts running from the scene.

One witness who has come forward saw the young man being "pummelled" with fists, it is understood.

Sgt Burke said the street area was busy at the time - about 3.30am - and he appealed for witnesses. Several cars also passed the scene as the incident occurred.

Gardaí are keeping an open mind about the motivation for the attack. Those with information are asked to contact Tralee Garda station at 066-7122022.
