London - Police started an investigation yesterday into a "cheque-book journalism" contract between a newspaper and a witness in the trial of British glam rocker, Gary Glitter.
The prosecutor, Mr David Archer, asked police "to carry out an investigation . . . to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed," the Crown Prosecution Service said.
The judge described as "highly reprehensible" a contract under which the woman Glitter was accused of assaulting, Ms Allison Brown, was to receive another £25,000 from the News of the World if Glitter was found guilty.
