Police have come under attack in Northern Ireland as rival mobs fought in Co Down.

Officers faced a barrage of bottles and stones as they dealt with clashes in the Irish Street area of Downpatrick.

Up to 40 people were involved in the overnight trouble.

A 17-year-old youth was taken to hospital after being stabbed in the chest in Irish Street at about the same time. His condition was not thought to be serious.

Meanwhile, in Belfast, an officer suffered a head wound after officers were attacked in the Short Strand area of east Belfast earlier today.

The officer was a member of a routine patrol which was attacked by stones on the Albertbridge Road.
