Congratulations to Fine Gael’s Damien English, who became a dad for the second time on Thursday when his wife, Laura, gave birth to Karla at the Rotunda in Dublin.

The joke in Fianna Fáil was that Enda Kenny, in an effort to butter up Nicolas Sarkozy in Brussels, told the French premier that one of his TDs had named his new daughter after Carla Bruni. (Not true, says Damien.)

Not to be outdone, there were congratulations in the Seanad on Wednesday for Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane, of Waterford, whose wife, Kathleen, gave birth to a baby boy, Finn.

“I’m not sure if the name was chosen because it rhymes with ‘Sinn’,” said Feargal Quinn.

“I suppose if he is to be called Finn as his first name, perhaps Sen Cullinane could call him Séin as his second name,” remarked Labour’s John Gilroy.

Finally, congratulations to Fine Gael deputy Nicky McFadden, who has just become the Dáil’s most glamorous granny. Her daughter, Caren, had a baby girl, Matilda.
