FORMER Irish boxing champion Mr Eamon Magee as awarded compensation yesterday for injuries he received when struck by a plastic bullet. He was hit in the chest when the RUC fired baton rounds during street disturbances near his home in the Ardoyne area of Belfast in May 1987.

Mr Magee, now aged 24, suffered severe bruising which kept him out of a major championship which he was favourite to win. He went on to become a double Irish champion and reached the world finals in Puerto Rico in 1989. He recently turned professional - and has his second paid fight next month on the Steve Collins world championship bill in Cork.

In the High Court in Belfast yesterday, Mr Magee sued the RUC chief constable. The case was settled out of court and Mr Ronald Bentley, QC, said the terms were not being disclosed.
