Plans to build a 144-place crèche and childcare centre near a mobile phone mast in an industrial estate in Navan have been criticised.
Mast Action in Meath (MAIM) says that in light of recent recommendations by Britain's National Radiological Protection Board, schools or childcare facilities should not be built near masts.
A recent report from the National Radiological Protection Board says technology using microwave radiation "is more likely to effect children due to their ongoing neurological development and thinner skulls".
MAIM has been campaigning for Meath County Council not to allow masts within 1 km of schools and says the proposed site at Townsparks, Navan, is beside an industrial estate and less than 200 metres from a Vodafone mast.
In September, the county council said it had served an enforcement notice in relation to a Vodafone mast which was erected on the same estate.
Vodafone has rejected the council's view that the mast is unauthorised. The matter is with An Bord Pleanála.
The planning application for the two-storey centre is lodged in the name of Navan Community Childcare Limited.
