The wave of violence in the North has continued with an attack in the Ballymoney estate in Co Antrim where three brothers died in 1998.

A pipe-bomb was discovered at 12.30 a.m. yesterday on the roof of a car in Carnany Drive, Ballymoney. An RUC spokesman said a sectarian motive could not be ruled out.

The local UUP representative, Mr James Leslie, said it was "poignant" and "disappointing" that families on the estate were being attacked after the killings of the three Quinn boys, who died when their home was petrolbombed.

A Catholic couple in Derry said they did not understand why their home on the Shearwater Road in the Waterside area of the city was attacked. The home of Mr Raymond Coyle (61) and Ms Anne Coyle (55) was also attacked in 1997. The RUC said yesterday's attack was sectarian.

"These people are cowards. How can they come in the middle of the night and attack a couple like us?" asked Ms Coyle. She was in a back room as the device exploded in the rear garden at about 1.30 a.m.

St Mary's chapel in Priest land Road in Bushmills, Co Antrim, was attacked yesterday morning for the second time in six months. The front door and hallway of the church suffered smoke and structural damage when a car was pushed against it and set alight at about 1.40 a.m.

In Larne, Co Antrim, a petrolbomb and the remains of a second were discovered yesterday by a caretaker in the grounds of St Anthony's Primary School.

A controlled explosion was carried out on a suspect device discovered under a car by the owner yesterday morning. The incident occurred in Kerrera Mews, in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

The Sinn Fein MLA, Mr Gerry Kelly, said the man was a former member of the party. "The UDA are fooling nobody. People know they are actively involved in attacks across north and east Antrim and now increasingly in north Belfast also," he said. Meanwhile, the RUC in New Mossley, Co Antrim, recovered two handguns, a sawn-off shotgun and a quantity of ammunition during searches on Thursday evening.
