The Minister for Public Enterprise was urged to support the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association in asking An Post to reconsider its decision not to issue a stamp to commemorate the association's centenary.
Ms O'Rourke was also praised for her stand on the retention of duty free.
She said she had already requested the company to reconsider but could not interfere with its philatelic advisory committee which decided on commemorative stamps.
Mr Willie Farrell (FF), who has long voiced concern about alcohol abuse, said the Minister had proved to be a winner when she had taken up the case for duty-free retention and he believed she would be successful on the stamp.
Mr Peter Callanan (FF), stressed that pioneers were not a dying breed. The original reasons for the movement's foundation remained valid.
An Post had made an unenlightened decision which was an insult to hundreds of thousands of people, and the Minister should make that clear to the company.
Mr Pat Moylan (FF) said it was tragic there were still so many broken homes because of the scourge of drink.
The celebratory event planned for Croke Park next May would be as big as any all-Ireland and would testify eloquently to the vibrancy of the PTAA.
