CAPE TOWN - Photographs of black corpses with white policemen gloating over them were shown at yesterday's hearing of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
In one picture, a bloody body is shown with a label attached and a policeman's boot on the neck. In another, a police liaison officer, Supt John Sterrenberg, then an officer in the riot squad, is seen smiling beside the body of a man he killed with three bullets.
The commission is inquiring into the deaths of seven young men who were allegedly led into a police ambush in Gugulethu black township near Cape Town by police informers in March 1986.
