Shots were fired and petrol bombs thrown as the PSNI came under attack during overnight rioting between loyalist and nationalist gangs in the Lower Ormeau Road area of Belfast. Two people were injured during the incident.
Police were called to the area at around 3am to investigate reports of an assault at the junction of Walnut St and Donegall Pass. On arrival petrol bombs were hurled and two shots were fired.
Two people are being held in relation to the incident.
Police later recoverd two crates of petrol bombs at Walnut Street in Donegall Pass.
Earlier, a man was seriously injured following a paramilitary-style beating in Lisnahull Gardens in Dungannon. He suffered multiple fractures to both legs after five masked men struck him repeatedly with a sledge hammer and baseball bats studded with nails.
