Waterford gardai are investigating an incident in which two petrol bombs were thrown at a patrol van on the outskirts of the city early yesterday morning, writes Dick Grogan
The patrol had gone to the Cloonalee estate on the Cork Road at 1.30 a.m. after a telephone caller reported that a car had been "hot-wired" and abandoned. They found no trace of the car, but noted two small fires in the middle of the road on the estate.
As one garda left the van to investigate, the home-made devices - beer bottles filled with petrol - were thrown at the vehicle. No damage was caused and there were no injuries, but a garda spokesman described the incident as a "sinister" development and appealed for witnesses.
