Peter Carey has won the Booker Prize for his novel True History Of The Kelly Gang.
He was named the winner of the £21,000 prize at a dinner at London's Guildhall, in a ceremony broadcast on BBC2.
Six novels were shortlisted for the prize for the best full-length novel of the year written by a British, Irish or Commonwealth novelist.
Mr Carey was the 6/4 bookie's favourite to win. Another former winner, Mr Ian McEwan, was second favourite at 15/8 for Atonement,according to William Hill.
Also in the running for the prize were Oxygenby Andrew Miller, number9dreamby David Mitchell, Hotel Worldby Ali Smith and The Dark Roomby Rachel Seiffert, the only first-time novelist on the list.
Last year the prize was won by Margaret Atwood for The Blind Assassin, her first win after being short-listed four times.
