THE United States' first ambassador to post-war Vietnam, Douglas "Pete" Peterson, arrived in Hanoi yesterday, proclaiming a new era of relations between the former foes.

"Today we exchange ambassadors, marking the full normalisation of diplomatic relations between our two countries." Peterson (61), a former Vietnam War fighter pilot and prisoner in the 1962-1975 war, told reporters at Hanoi's Noi Bai airport.

O.J. Simpson, who once earned thousands for personal appearances, has to pay £375 to play in a celebrity golf tournament in Florida this weekend.

Tournament organisers, who hope to raise £30,000 for medical research, say they are not embarrassed by Simpson's presence. Actors Denzel Washington and Will Smith are among the celebrities taking part.

Pamela Anderson has told a Los Angeles court she objected to baring her breasts in a film which has become the subject of litigation because she is refusing to make it.

The Italian film director Marco Ferreri, who made La Grande Bouffe, died in Paris yesterday after a heart attack, Cannes Film Festival official Gilles Jacob announced. "The Italian cinema has lost one of its most original artists, one of its most personal directors," Jacob said.

The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Culture Minister, Walter Veltroni, said that the Italian cinema had lost "one of its masters".

Ferreri, who was 69, made more than 20 films alter 1958, many of them in France. Three of his films won awards at Cannes.
