Former Austrian President Kurt Waldheim admits for the first time in a new autobiography that he was wrong to conceal his service for the Nazi German army.
Waldheim (77), who served as UN Secretary General from 1972-1982, refused to step down as Austria's leader despite revelations in 1986 that he had lied about his wartime service in the Balkans as an intelligence officer for Hitler's Wehrmacht. In his 300 page book Die Antwort (The Answer) he insists he was wrongly attacked by the media, the American government and the World Jewish Congress.
