POP star Michael Jackson today makes his first live stage appearance since his dramatic collapse in New York two months ago and the announcement of his divorce from Lisa Marie Presley. Jackson, who flew into London on Friday wearing a black mask, is to perform his international hit Earth Song at the Brit Awards, pop music's answer to the Hollywood Oscars.

His live appearance, at the London show was a major coup for the organisers of the Brit Awards which will also mark the final appearance before their breakup of Take That.

A famous veterinary surgery is to be turned into a museum and visitors' centre. The building in Thirsk, north Yorkshire, was the practice of local vet Alf Wight for 50 years. He was better known to millions as James Herriot, the author of All Creatures Great and Small and other stories.

Hambleton District Council are understood to have paid £225,000 for the building. Wight died last year leaving more than £5 million.
