Singer Barry Manilow had to abandon his encore at a concert in England at the weekend when fans rushed to the stage. A security guard broke a finger as members of the 4,000-strong audience blocked gangways while Manilow sang I Write The Songs.
US talk-show star Oprah Winfrey travels to Texas this week for a legal showdown with cattlemen who have a $12 million beef against her. Jury selection begins today in a lawsuit in which Winfrey is accused of driving down cattle prices by bad-mouthing hamburgers in a 1996 show about mad cow disease.
Titanic, Hollywood's most expensive movie ever, won the Golden Globe award for the year's best dramatic film at the weekend. Peter Fonda won the best dramatic actor award for his portrayal of a bee-keeper in Ulee's Gold. Fonda looked overwhelmed. "God, it's great to be back . . . I wish my dad were here tonight," he said. Dame Judi Dench was "thrilled" at being named best actress for her portrayal of Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown.
Rock 'n' roll pioneer Carl Perkins, famed for his hit Blue Suede Shoes, died yesterday in Tennessee after influencing a generation of musicians. Perkins (65) died of complications related to a recent series of strokes and had been in hospital for about five weeks.
