Frasier was named best US TV comedy for the fourth consecutive year on Sunday while Law & Order was a first-time winner as best drama at the 49th annual Emmy Awards.
Ellen DeGeneres won an Emmy as part of the writing team for her comedy Ellen, whose main character had come out as a lesbian. "I accept this on behalf of all of the people, and the teenagers especially, out there, who think there's something wrong with them because they're gay," said Ms DeGeneres.
Newcomer Gillian Anderson won the award for best actress in a drama, for The X-Files.
British pop stars including Elton John, Sting and Paul McCartney were headliners at last night's concert in London to benefit homeless victims of the Soufriere volcano on Monserrat.
The benefit concert also featured Eric Clapton, Marc Knopfler and Mick Hucknall. It was organised for the Royal Albert Hall by Sir George Martin, the former Beatles producer. His recording studio, built on the British island in 1979, was smothered by volcanic ashes following numerous eruptions since the end of June.
