A 22-year-old pedestrian was killed in Athlone on Sunday night after being struck by a car driven by an 18-year-old man.
The man suffered serious head injuries in the incident on the Dublin Road and was removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, where he died.
The driver of the car was arrested at the scene and taken to Athlone Garda station. He was later released and a file on the case is being prepared for the DPP.
Meanwhile, gardaí yesterday released the name of the victim of a fatal road crash.
David Carolan (30) from Billis, New Inns, Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, died when his motorcycle hit a wall in Drumbear, close to Monaghan town, at 5.15pm on Sunday.
These deaths brought to three the number of people killed on Ireland's roads at the weekend. In Co Antrim, a woman died in a single-vehicle incident close to the Larne roundabout on Sunday.
Gardaí said last week that they would deploy extra resources over the Easter bank holiday weekend in an effort to reduce the number of crashes. Officers manned hundreds of checkpoints across the State in a similar operation to that undertaken during the recent St Patrick's Day holiday, when there was a 25 per cent increase in detected drink-driving incidents compared to the same period in 2007.
Last week, the Road Safety Authority released figures showing that 22 people had been killed in road crashes over Easter in the last five years, and a further 52 people had been seriously injured.
