IRISH fashion manufacturers have been praised for producing marketable clothes. At the launch of the latest phase of An Bord Trachtila's "Look to Our Own" campaign, the Ireland Market Director, Mr Jim Mongey, said the industry continues to make desirable clothes.
Sales from the spring collections shown yesterday by 26 manufacturers at the promotion in The Commons Restaurant, St Stephens Green, Dublin, are expected to generate £1.5 million this year. The Irish clothing industry is worth £400 million.
The show featured a feminine comeback of pastel coloured, crepe shift dresses and small matching jackets. And there is certainly a revival in the smart little suit as well, which can have trousers or a skirt.
Brand names such as Regine, Loretta Bloom, Michael H, and Watercolours are focusing on the new pretty woman using ivory, palest pinks, ice blue and soft mint green. For the first time in decades it looks as if pretty could also be profitable.
An Bord Trachtala's, "Look To Our Own" campaign draws attention to Irish manufacturers in Ireland, with the promotion covering women's and men's wear, knits sportswear, lingerie and children's clothing.
There is also a new drive to increase sales in Northern Ireland. The campaign has brought about an increase of £20 million in Irish fashion sales since 1990.
A series of fashion shows and major store promotions are planned in which the startlingly pretty and new will push out all that is sombre and sensible.
