PARIS - In a major embarrassment for France's ruling Gaullist party, Paris's mayor, Mr Jean Tiberi, said yesterday he had been charged with embezzling public funds in a corruption case involving his wife.

The mayor, who succeeded Mr Jacques Chirac in Paris City Hall when he was elected President in May 1995, was indicted on Wednesday over an allegedly bogus 36-page report by his wife for which she was paid a "fee" of 200,000 francs (about £24,000), City Hall officials confirmed.
