Socialite Paris Hilton has been arrested on cocaine possession charges after police stopped the car she was in on a Las Vegas street.
Hilton was booked into the Clark County Detention Centre last night on a charge of possession of cocaine, a Las Vegas police spokesman said.
Hilton (29), was in a car driven by a friend which was stopped when officers noticed what they suspected to be cannabis smoke coming from it, he said. “Officers noticed a vehicle leaving smoke trail of a controlled substance (and) made a stop based on that."
During the stop, he said officers found what appeared to be a drug in Hilton’s purse and later tests showed that it was cocaine.
The spokesman said Hilton was apparently recognised by passers-by and a crowd quickly gathered in the area where the vehicle had been pulled over.
Hilton was released from jail his morning while the unidentified driver was charged with driving under the influence.
Hilton, the great-granddaughter of Hilton hotels founder Conrad Hilton, has worked as a model, singer, actress, fashion designer and reality TV star. She runs multimillion-dollar businesses based on her name including clothing lines, fragrances and wine.
Hilton was arrested this summer after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on suspicion of possession of cannabis. The case was then dropped at a court hearing.
She also pleaded no contest in 2007 to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
After spending about 23 days in jail, Hilton told US television host Larry King that the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She said she wanted “to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis”.
