Parents and those caring for children should be extra vigilant following the abduction of a ten-year-old in Co Westmeath yesterday and growing signs of paedophile activity in the country, the Irish Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Children said today.

The ISPCC says yesterday’s incident and the recent seizure of child pornography by gardaí shows there are number of adults at large in Ireland who present a risk to children.

They said the summer required extra vigilance when children are involved in less structured activities without the parental or other supervision.

They advise parents and other carers to discuss the danger of child abduction with children and remind them what to do if confronted by a stranger.

They also urge adults to report any incident of concern to the Garda.
