The families of the three US soldiers held captive in Yugoslavia said they were hopeful but wary of the reports that the men might soon be released.

The families said the US military told them a release was under discussion, but that the outcome was uncertain.

"I don't know what to believe. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, this is going to be a `peace thing' and they're going to let him go.

"I'll believe it when I see it," said Ms Lisa McKinney, mother-in-law of Sgt Christopher Stone.

The soldiers - Specialist Steven Gonzales (21), Sgt Andrew Ramirez (24), and Sgt Stone (25) - were captured by Yugoslav forces on March 31st while patrolling along the Macedonia-Yugoslavia border.

Ms McKinney said she was stunned when she was told about the possible release because the Yugoslav government previously said the men would be held until the NATO bombing stopped.

"We have our fingers crossed and we're hopeful, but it is [just] a report," Ms McKinney said.
