The Department of Education has been called upon to carry out urgent remedial work on a school in County Kerry, which has been described by the teachers' union, ASTI, as the "worst secondary school in the country".

A report delivered by the Health and Safety Authority found the school was in a very poor state of repair and could prove a danger to pupils and staff.

Parents and teachers at Cloghane Secondary School today protested at the conditions at the school and called for the provision of temporary accommodation. They say the Department have promised a new school near Castlegregory in 2004 but have yet to give a date when it will be ready.

Ms Nora Dwyer, a teacher and former pupil at the school told RTE radio today that the 20-year-old prefab buildings were "disintegrating" and had no repairs done in recent years.

Electrical conductors and fittings are exposed, toilets are leaking and the school is infested with rats, she said. One of the buildings had a space between the bottom of a wall and the floor, she added.

Ms Dwyer said the 78 students and teachers were suffering from low morale because they had very few facilities and little educational equipment.
