Fifty-five leading Palestinian figures have urged a halt to attacks against civilians in Israel, in an appeal published in Al-Qudsnewspaper.

The appeal came a day after a suicide bombing on a Jerusalem bus that killed 19 Israelis and the young Palestinian bomber.

"These operations do not help our national plan for freedom and independence. On the contrary, they strengthen the enemies of peace and give pretexts to the aggressive government of (Israeli Prime Minister) Ariel Sharon to pursue his furious war against our people," they wrote in an appeal.

Among the signatories were Mr Sari Nusseibeh, the PLO political commissioner for Jerusalem, and Mr Hanan Ashrawi, a deputy in the legislative council.

They pressed the planners of the suicide attacks to "revise their calculations and stop inciting young people to commit them."
