Pakistan says it fired on Indian plane at weekend

Pakistan said today it fired on an Indian plane that crossed into its airspace at the weekend but did not shoot it down.

Government spokesman Maj Gen Rashid Qureshi told a news briefing in Islamabad the incident occurred yesterday and that the aircraft had crossed back into Indian airspace, where it also came under Indian fire.

"It did cross . . . and it did take fire," Maj Gen Qureshi said. "It crossed back into Indian airspace. Their own troops fired at it. I think a very senior air force officer was on board".

Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan are locked in a military standoff with up to a million troops facing off along their borders. The latest tension comes after New Delhi blamed Pakistan-based militants for a bloody December attack on its parliament.
