Pakistan's military said today it had killed and wounded several Indian troops in exchanges of fire across the military control line in disputed Kashmir in recent days.

"We effectively responded to the Indian firing today and killed and wounded at least 10 Indian soldiers," a military spokesman in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, told reporters.

The rival armies regularly fire at each other across the tense Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed Himalayan region at the centre of decades of tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The spokesman said one Pakistani woman was killed in Indian cross-border mortar and machinegun fire on the Chakoti district 60 kilometres southeast of Muzaffarabad.
