Pakistani police have arrested five men trained by Indian intelligence to carry out bomb attacks to disrupt Thursday's parliamentary election, police and media said today.

The three suspects from near Srinigar, summer capital of Indian-ruled Kashmir, were detained last night 70 km east of the Pakistani capital Islamabad, superintendent of police Mr Inayatullah Farooq said.

Mr Farooq told a news briefing in Rawalpindi, south of Islamabad, that the three had confessed that they were working for Indian intelligence agency RAW and were trained by the Indian army in using explosives.

Police said they were carrying explosives when they were detained.

Pakistan's official APP news agency earlier reported that two Pakistanis were arrested while crossing back into Pakistan's populous Punjab province "after getting training from India".

Quoting police, the agency said they were detained carrying explosive materials in the eastern city of Lahore, near the border with India.
