New Delhi - Pakistan yesterday accepted an offer of peace talks from India even as Indian combat aircraft and troops battled Islamic guerrillas in the disputed state of Kashmir, Rahul Bedi writes.

A Delhi Foreign Office statement proposed that the Pakistani Foreign Minister, Mr Sartaj Aziz, visit the Indian capital on Saturday. The offer came a day after the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, accused Pakistan of armed aggression by sending its soldiers to occupy portions of Kargil in Indian-held Kashmir.

Suspected separatist guerrillas set off a landmine in Kashmir on Tuesday, killing six Indian army soldiers and wounding three, police in Srinagar said.

PA adds: Fighting broke out between rival Indian and Pakistan supporters on the pitch in Old Trafford last night after India's victory in the Cricket World Cup clash between the two nations.
