A subpoena has been served on the DUP leader, the Rev Ian Paisley, to attend and give evidence to the inquiry at Derry's Guildhall next Tuesday, it emerged yesterday.
Mr Christopher Clarke QC, counsel to the tribunal, told the inquiry that Dr Paisley had been called as to whether, and, if so, what assurances were given in advance of Bloody Sunday which led to a threatened counter-demonstration by his followers being called off. The Paisleyite Democratic Unionist Association was reported as saying that it had been given an assurance that the Civil Rights march would be stopped - by force if necessary.
