More than 30 cases of influenza type A and B have been identified by the national testing centre.
A spokesman for the Virus Reference Laboratory in UCD said one case of the more virulent Type A was identified as H3N2, consistent with the "Wuhan" strain, which is being recorded in other countries, and is named after its Chinese place of origin.
The VRL has found 25 cases of Type A and six of Type B influenza. The spokesman said "we are very happy to have culture positive material which tells us exactly what is out".
There have been 18 recorded cases of respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) which affects young children.
