Dar Es Salaam - In life Julius Nyerere shunned greed and opulence, unlike many African leaders. In death, the pomp of a formal state occasion was overshadowed yesterday by the outpouring of grief from the poor whom the former Tanzanian president inspired.
Nearly one million people thronged the streets of Tanzania's capital to pay their last respects as Nyerere's body arrived from London, where he died of leukaemia last Thursday.
