THE finding of Marilyn Rynn's body at least brings to an end the ordeal of her family who had been without news of her whereabouts since December 22nd.
For many other families that ordeal continues.
There has been no news of Josephine Dollard since she went missing while hitching a lift from Dublin to her home in Callan, co Kilkenny, on November 10th.
Her movements were tracked as far as Moone in co Kildare where she made a phone call to her sister, saying she had got a lift shortly after 11.30 p.m. She has not been seen since.
There is no news either of Fiona Davis (15), from Marian Terrace, Tipperary, who has been missing since July 21st.
Margaret Glennon (49), from Seagrange Road, Baldoyle, Dublin, has been missing since May 22nd. Although her sister returned from the US in October to help look for her no trace of her has been found.
Other women have been missing for longer. The American student, Annie McCarrick, who disappeared from Johnnie Fox's pub in Glencullen, co Dublin, in March 1993 has not been seen since, despite extensive searches by the Garda and her family, who came over from the US to look for her.
Last year the search ended for two other missing women, Mary Cummins and Patricia McGauley. They had been missing since 1992 and 1991 respectively, and their bodies were found in west Dublin after a Garda search.
A man has been charged with their murders.
The body of another woman was found washed up on Dollymount Strand on December 30th. Denise Boyers, from Portmarnock, Dublin, had been missing since December 18th. Her family was particularly concerned about her as she suffered from depression and black outs and needed medical attention.
While the majority of the 1,500 people or so who go missing every year turn up quite quickly, between 15 and 20 do not.
