Opposition wishes Lenihan well

Fine Gael, the Labour Party and Sinn Féin have wished Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan well in his battle with cancer.

Fine Gael deputy leader Richard Bruton said he hoped the Minister would have a full and speedy recovery.

“In particular, the Minister’s frank and detailed statement about his illness is commendable, as well as his determination to concentrate his energies on the Department of Finance,” Mr Bruton said.

Labour deputy leader Joan Burton said the Minister enjoys personal respect and admiration on all sides of the Dáil. She said he would have the support of every member of the House in the months ahead.

“The manner in which the condition was disclosed on St. Stephen’s Day can only have added to the stress of the Minister and his family, but Mr Lenihan has dealt with this situation with characteristic dignity,” she said.

“Brian Lenihan is a courageous and resilient individual and I have no doubt . . . that he is determined to harness these qualities over the coming months in fighting this condition,” Ms Burton added. “Our thoughts will be with Brian and his wife and children over the coming months.”

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams also wished the Minister a quick recovery.

“My thoughts at this time are with Minister Lenihan and his family,” he said. “I wish him well with his treatment and hope to see him make a speedy recovery.”
