Iraq's opposition has adopted a statement stressing a future Iraqi government must be democratic and based on the rule of law, and that no leader should be imposed from outside of Iraq.

The statement approved at today's meeting organised by the United States in Ur, just outside the southern Iraqi town of Nasiriyah, also said that ousted president Saddam Hussein's Baath party must be dissolved.

It further stated that "Iraqis and the coalition must work together to tackle the immediate issues of restoring security and basic services."
