Opera Ireland has cancelled its Spring season at the Gaiety Theatre due to lack of funding from the Arts Council.

Opera Ireland said that while it will not receive confirmation until later this month of its actual grant level, the board is satisfied that sufficient Arts Council funds will not be available to promote the season as originally planned.

The opera company had planned to stage two operas - Don Giovanniand Jenufaover nine days in April.

The cancellation marks only the second season to be lost in the company's 62-year history. The previous cancellation, of a winter season in 1988, was also made for financial reasons.
