Eight members of the Oireachtas are in the Philippines capital Manila this week to attend the assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The Irish delegation is headed by the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Rory Kiely. He is accompanied by Senator Don Lydon and Dáil deputies Dan Wallace, Billy Kelleher, Cecilia Keaveney, Martin Brady, John Perry and Paddy McHugh.

Among the issues for discussion at the assembly are war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and terrorism. It will also debate international debt and the observance of human rights in the prevention and management of Aids.

Around 140 parliaments and five regional assemblies are affiliated to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
