Offaly man dies in canal plunge

The day after he celebrated his 25th birthday, a Co Offaly man died in a drowning accident in Tullamore yesterday morning.

The day after he celebrated his 25th birthday, a Co Offaly man died in a drowning accident in Tullamore yesterday morning.

The accident occurred at 6 a.m. as Mr Adrian Duffy, Ballina gar, Tullamore, drove his van from his home to pick up a colleague in Tullamore. It was freezing heavily at the time and the van mounted a steep bank before plunging into the Grand Canal Harbour.

Members of Tullamore Fire Brigade recovered the body, which was taken to Tullamore General Hospital where Mr Duffy was pronounced dead on arrival.
