IF word of new businesses is music to the ears of this country's economists, they'll be delighted to hear of John Boyle's new enterprise. The 27 year old Mr Boyle, son of Sligo based regional bank manager Michael Boyle and his wife Noreen, has just started a music management and promotion company and signed up several acts.
Despite his relative youth, John Boyle has already enjoyed a varied career after following his father's profession for two years, he moved to London where he studied for a business degree while working for Tower Records. When the same company moved here, so did he before transferring to promoter Denis Desmond's MCD, where he was responsible for organising the likes of the Thang nights in the Tivoli theatre and Sin at Joe Murphy's Blue Note Club.
Now he and Mr Murphy are planning further events in addition to his work promoting new groups. Among the latter is a dance band called The Hastas Crew that features Boca Kilkenny (son of Ozzie) and Rod Morris (son of Thelma Mansfield and Johnny Morris) plus Morgan Weymes. . Their name derives from a late night linguistic error planning to call themselves after the Latin word for speed, the band members consulted a dictionary and mistakenly picked on spear instead.
Mr Boyle has been much more precise when picking names for his own projects. The new management company is called Yakuza after the Japanese mafia ("Well, everyone claims managers are total gangsters anyway") while his Bitsasushi record label has a division called Tsumami (meaning Tidal Wave).
Where will this fondness for Japanese names end? That's what Mr Boyle's long term partner Sharon Gernon must be wondering now that the couple has announced a forth coming joint production they're expecting the birth of their first child at the end of August.
