Dr Tony O'Reilly has sold his Pittsburgh home, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. Dr O'Reilly (64) retires next month as chairman of the Pittsburgh-based H.J. Heinz Co. He is now chairman and chief executive of Independent News and Media and will live in his homes in Dublin and Castlemartin, Co Kildare.
The newspaper said Dr O'Reilly was looking for $2.4 million (£2.1 million) for the 34-room, 8,000 sq ft Tudor home set in seven acres in the suburb of Fox Chapel. The likely purchaser is named as Mr Chip Ganassi, owner of a car-racing team. The house is described as having eight bedrooms and eight full-size bathrooms. It comes with a swimming pool, tennis courts, a guesthouse, and Japanese and English gardens.
The basement has been turned into an Irish pub, featuring a bar and a cast-iron mantel on a fireplace.
Dr O`Reilly moved to Pittsburgh in 1973 when he was appointed president of Heinz, the first European to become president of a major US corporation. He was 37 at the time. Dr O`Reilly joined Heinz in 1969 as managing director of its British subsidiary.
